~@~ Frost/Ice Maiden Bow Amazon For PvM ~@~

Introduction:
I have been playing bowazons for many years now... and out of different setups and attempts... I always come back to the trusty old Frostmaiden, or, Icemaiden as some people like to call her. She is possibly one of the safest characters to create when gaming by yourself or with friends, and is by far one of the most helpful characters out in any PvM scenario. I have not included everything I wanted too, I just could not wait to post up what I have... hope you enjoy it.

You will most likely think this is just like Krembanen's PvM Bowazon Guide... in a sense it is... but... this is specifically designed around the bow skill... "Freezing Arrow" and its' synergy "Cold Arrow... all 'bowazons' can be setup with different items for different people and their gaming style. There are positives and negatives for each setup, EVEN for the 'Frostmaiden'. So I will be setting this guide out in the following manner.

Section 1. What I am currently using... Items/Skills et cetera... Just a summary of what & why I use
Section 2. All round information on skills/items et cetera. These will include as many resources for you to use.
Section 3. Also included will be "Item Comparison Tables" these are just general concepts of builds with different items.
...NOTE: Please read "Section 3" before commenting on other items... you may find it included in the tables.

-=~@~=- Section One -=~@~=-

Iron Frost/Icemaiden:
Iron... represents "Physical" damage... Frost/Ice... represents "Cold" damage... Maiden... self explanatory.
I am still working on some of the inventory items. My softcore character is lvl92 at the moment (listed below) and I have also been working on my hardcore character at the same time, she is level 54 now. Please bear in mind that I do not use any "Hero Editors" when I create my characters, I like to do most of the levelling and gaming by myself, I also like to see where I can work on them at those stressful areas.

What I Achieve So Far:
Knockback: This is a must to have, especially for Hardcore. Even though you Freeze MOST monsters, some immunes need to be trapped at a distance safe to your zon.
Mana Leech: Definately required for this build as Freezing Arrow is a mana guzzler (5+% is suitable for the Iron Frostmaiden)
Life Leech: This comes in very handy (5+% is suitable for any Frostmaiden)
89% IAS Bp: This is the lowest breakpoint that I would suggest you to achieve with your build. (using Might Aura Merc with Pride)
Pierce: 100% is MYideal, but, it is not a requirement.

My Stat Setup:
Please remember that my character is level 92 and I have other items on that help me achieve item requirements
Strength: I have only added 15 points to this so far.
Vitality: Zon base is 20, I have added 100 (Softcore Character), and will not need to up this more.
Dexterity: I have placed all other points into this.
Energy: NONE added. The physical damage is high enough with Mana Leech.

My Item Setup:

Andariels Visage: You may wonder why I use this item instead of a 120/45/Life or FRW circlet/coronet/tiara/diadem.
#1 +2 All Skills: This helps with: Battle Orders, Battle Command, Saves skill points for better use.
#2 20% Increased Attack Speed: Helps reach my IAS bp by adding a 40ed/15%ias Jewel
#3 8-10% Life leech: Well, I do not have to worry about buying that expensive ring.
#4 25-30 Strength: Since I am using Windforce, this helps me save stat points for Dexterity.

Windforce: You may wonder why this bow for a Frostmaiden instead of ICE Gmb or other.
#1 This yields the most physical damage, and this is needed versus all the cold immunes
#2 20% Increased Attack Speed: Helps reach my IAS bp by adding a 40ed/15%ias Jewel
#3 Has knockback, making room to use the best PvM gloves: Laying of Hands
#4 Has 6-8% mana leech, this means you have cheaper magic/rare ring option, like 18+str/dmg/ar/res

Laying of Hands: This is Missile/Melee PvM characters best glove, but, I will delve into it's benefits for new people:
#1 20% Increased Attack Speed helps to reach your desired IAS bp
#2 350% Enhanced Damage versus Demons, all bosses, and alot of tough monsters are Demons
#3 50% Fire resistence. Most attacks in certain areas are Fire.
NOTE: With Andy's Visage/Windforce (40ed/15ias jewels) and Laying of Hands, you reach the 89% IAS breakpoint
....... 9 FPA normal/Freezing Arrow: This is a good base for bowazon and leaves ammy spot open, unless using a Faith Merc
....... You also get Knockback, Life Leech and Mana Leech... 3 items covering basically everything a bowazon needs.

Fortitude: One of the most common armors for Bowazon (PvP or PvM)
#1 300% enhanced damage can not be scoffed at.
#2 25-30% all resistences helps
#3 hp/lvl 8-12 (in eighths), i.e. +(1-1.5) to Life per Character Level is always good for any character

Razortail: This is the most common belt for a PvM Bowazon, even PvM Javazon.
#1 This has +33 to Pierce, this combined with level 9 Pierce skill, you reach 102% (100% pierce)
#2 +15 Dexterity is always welcome on a bowazon.
#3 +10 to Maximum Damage

Ravenfrost: This is extremely common for MOST builds, but, Ideal ring for Frost/Icemaiden
#1 +(15-20) to Dexterity for Bowazon is gold
#2 Cannot be Frozen, this is ideal.
#3 +(150-250) to Attack Rating is also helpful
#4 Adds 15-45 Cold Damage [100 frames (4 sec.) Normal], ideal for Freezing Arrow

Rare Ring: There are a number of combinations, some extremely expensive. I concentrate on Strength.
#1 You need 17+ Strength mod
#2 Minimum or Maximum damage is a bonus
#3 up to +120 to AR ("Platinum") or up to +150 to AR (coupled "Platinum" and "of Radiance") bonus
#4 up to 11 all res and/or 30 single res bonus
#5 Life &/or Mana Leech is a bonus(WF has ML & Andy's has LL)
#6 up to +15 to Dexterity bonus
#7 5% Bonus to Attack rating bonus (Sun.. also gives +5 Light Radius)

War Travellers: Most PvP bowazons use these, but also ideal for PvM builds.
#1 Adds 15-25 Damage which is very good
#2 10 Strength is very helpful
#3 10 Vitality is very helpful
#4 (30-50) % MF, you are PvM, so some MF is good.

Amulets:
I switch from Mara's to Atmas (keep in your inventory).
..Mara's for Pre casting Valk, Battle Command & Battle Orders: Alsoif entering dangerous areas like: Throne Room.
..Atma's when it is safe to start killing.

My Switch Items:
Call To Arms (CtA) + Lidless Wall

My Skill Setup:
The skills I have selected is designed for a Frostmaiden/Strafer, you can adjust Strafe skill to adapt to Multi Shot if you so desire.

20 points into Freezing Arrow: This Skill has a greater splash radius than sorcs Glacial Spike, rendering non immunes 'Immobile'
20 points into Cold Arrow: This skill enhances the cold damage of Freezing Arrow.
20 points into Strafe: Each arrow yeilds 'proc' items and the dmg/auto targeting is very helpful.
20 points into Valkyrie: Basically, your main Merc... Costs nothing but mana... Extremelly helpful
... NOTE Valk: You want to Pre Cast this on switch to get slvl27+
06 points into Critical Strike: This reaches 61% before diminishing returns.
03 point/s into Pierce
... NOTE Pierce: You want to reach level 9 skill after equipment.
01 points into Pre Requisitesand all other Passive skills.
... NOTES Cont'd:
... I normally pre cast everything with Mara's on switch before gaming... you can opt for adding in Passive Skillers to accommodate those little areas.

My Inventory Setup:
My inventory is INCOMPLETE, but I will list down what I want to complete:
Cube: This takes up 4 squares, but has 12 squares, good for holding drops
Torch: 20/xx
Anni: 20/xx/x
33 x Fine Small Charms of Winter: 1-3 max damage / 10-20 attack rating / 4-5 min to 7-9 max cold damage
Townportal Scrolls are held in the last column of my belt
... NOTE: If using Atma's you will alter Skill points &/or the inventory: 1 or 2x Passive Skiller to replace some of the Small Charms.

My Mercenary & Items:
Because my items & inventory are based around physical and cold damage combined, I wanted to get more physical damage for leeching.
Act2 Might Aura Merc:
EPride Cryptic Axe with lvl19 Concentration Aura
EFortitude
Crown of Thieves: <-- It has life leech and works for now, i like his Gold drops when he gets a kill

My Strategies Or Gaming Areas:
I will start off with what I do in gaming... you do not have to follow this to the letter, but, I find it helps me and my gaming style.

Basics Pre Casting:
Put Maras (or Seraphs) ammy on.
Go to safe waypoint: I like River and:
Cast Battle Command x2:
Cast Valkyrie:
Cast Battle Command x2
Cast Battle Orders x2
Swap Ammy with Atma's Scarab:
... NOTE: Repeat this before entering any other areas.
... When entering dangerous areas like the "Throne Room",
... remain on switch (CtA/Lidless or Spirit) and keep your Maras on,
... this will helpyou survive those sudden packs, like Souls

Chaos:
How this setup deals with "Iron Maiden" on a Melee Merc, well it doesn't, your gaming style determines his survival.
#1 I target the caster behind the mob with "Freezing Arrow" and shoot. "WTF", he is immune cold, why?
... Physical damage + 100% Pierce + Knockback + Freezing all non immunes directly in path of Arrow, interrupting caster
#2 Divide and Conquer by using your valk/decoy, this is an old strategy and you can target Caster with GA or FA
#3 Target Caster and cast Valk or decoy on top of him, allows decrep curse cast.
#4 Combine #2 & #3
#5 Keep merc behind you and kill off those that get his attention and quickly retreat.

NOTE: I use Might/Pride merc... when doing Chaos and using above strategies, I like the fact that both auras (might/conc)
... are constantly affecting myself and party... I have noticed that using Infinity and these strategies, that the conviction
... aura only effects those that are IN RANGE, and since I basically kill monsters at the EDGE of/and OFF screen, I never see
... them in range of aura... only sometimes cold immunes get within radius... this again depends on gaming strategy and amount of people in game.

Killing Pindle and Nihlathok also Gold Chests
..Just before Pindle: I always let the undead rise, I use decoy to keep them away & draw-in the out-of-range undead: Strafe/Multi.
..
Keeping Red Portal Open: Never get "Halls" waypoint, this way you get to kill Pindle everytime.
Finding Nihlathok = http://forums.d2jsp.org/index.php?showtopic=21896859&f=21
I will use the link as an indication to where the GOLD CHESTS are located.
1st Image: "WEST" above the next level down: Gold Chest
2nd Image: "East", hard right and slightly down from the next level down
3rd Image: "Southwest" Gold chest located where you see the WELL in the image.

As you can tell, the way down can be found by locating the Gold Chests as well.
I head right of screen first, if it is not there, I head southward from there, if not there, then it is definately hard left of screen.

Getting to Baal:
..WSK Level 2 .... Souls are a major problem for most bowazons, especially glasscannons.
...When you use the Waypoint to Lvl 2, move your Amazon to the back wall, refer Basic Pre Casting
...Stay on switch, and cast decoy near the other end of bridge, this ill determine what is on that side of bridge.
......Why cast decoy with Cta/Lidless?.... +2 Skills to: D/A/E, Decoy (more life), also higher Defense and block %
...If there are souls, you can move to safe spot if needed, switch back to bow and strafe them off-screen.
...Now with souls present, you have two options, yes risk, or chicken out, I do not chicken out, if there are Undead Revivers, I think about it.
...If I proceed, I just use decoy alot more, cast around corners, cast on a safe diagonal away from my character.

..WSK Level 3 Physical Immunes (Harpies) / Frenzy Death Lords / Knights
... To me, the worse combination of monsters on level 3 for a bowazon, even a full vita build.
... refer Basic Pre Casting
.......Freezing Arrow will be your Saviour in most instances, you can freeze the Harpies and melee knights.
.......Decoy & Valk will be your tanks. One thing will save your merc from Iron Maiden, that is if he is attacking
.......one of the Harpies

..Throne Room Stygian Dolls, Knights, Souls
.... Again a very nasty combination, another nasty lot are: Stygian, Souls with Undead Revivors.
... refer Basic Pre Casting
.... When entering, move cursor to the bottom of the screen, this can help you to not get pummeled and
.... your valk and merc can take the damage. Note: if there is a conviction Aura boss while souls are around
.... you might as well chicken out, if I had chicken, I would. Anyway, if it is crowded by entrance and you successfully
.... manage to cast decoy at one end and can run around to safety, open tp and get out to regroup or get merc.
.... Basic strategy, cast decoy ahead of you to the opposite side of your bowazon in the open areas to see what monsters
.... are around that area, from there you will be able to strafe off-screen, position yourself into a safe area.

..Baals Minions: Easy
.... Basic Principle: Cast Decoy at the Base of Stairs where Baal is Sitting
.... Stay just out of sight of Decoy, you will see a "FLASH" this indicates Minions Spawning
.... Freezing Arrow (Only Cold Immunes are the skeletal magi of wave 2 and occasionally some of the bosses)
.... Strafe/FA etc.. I am sure you can figure the rest out while gaming.

-=~@~=- Section Two -=~@~=-

Character Class Information
The following link will provide you with the information regarding your starting attributes and what you receive per level you gain, and what you get if you place points into certain attributes: http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/classes/amazon.shtml

Stat Placement:
Glasscannon:
This character is after pure damage, and is only best used when playing Softcore, considering that death is of no concern
Vitality:
This character is after pure survivability, and is more useful for Hardcore, considering, death is a major issue.
Vita/Dex Hybrid:
This character can be implemented either Hardcore/Softcore, I have found that 130-200 vita to be a good option (naked) and
this leaves enough points to increase your bow damage and Max Block on switch if you choose to use SS/titan.

Stats Table: This is setup to see how to achieve 134 Strength for Windforce using Andy's helm, it also gives you an idea of your stats @ level 85 = 420 + 15 (3x A3 Quest) = 435... please note that if you choose other items, you will distribute points differently, let's take Gore Riders for an example, you will need to add another 10 points into strength.

Skills:
There are two (2) main skills for a Frostmaiden to max, Freezing Arrow and Cold Arrow (Synergy: 12% cold damage per HARD skill). You can choose to be a "Frostmaiden/Strafer" or "Frostmaiden/Multi Shot" or "Frostmaiden/Strafe + Multi Shot Hybrid", it is up to you. My personal preference is Frostmaiden/Strafer, this combined in with Valk/Decoy/Merc is rather effective.

Passive Skills Link:
http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/skills/amazon-passive.shtml

Freezing Arrow:
Hell Difficulty: You can not freeze certain monsters because they have "Chill Effectiveness 0".
Souls & Gloams (Willowisps), Bone Fetish (dolls) and Blood Lord (Death Lord only "dual-axe-weilding brutes found in WSK & Throne)
Thanks to Faelwenfor providing this information and links:
http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/monsters/act3-willowisp.shtml
http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/monsters/act5g-willowisp.shtml

This skill is a mana "Guzzler", so, to keep the mana up, you will have to choose what best suits your gaming style to recover the mana.
#1 Mass Mana Leech Items
#2 Act2 Might Merc using Insight
#3 Some Mana Leech Items utilising Strafe or Multishot in-between Freezing Arrow
#4 Phoenix on switch (note that you do not gain much return as bodies shatter)
#5 Mana pot mad.
#6 Mana after eack Kill (MaeK) items... Thanks to those reminding me... refer acknowledgements.

Mercenaries & Their Items:
Once again, this section is based on your own personal preference and how you want to play the game. I would say that you choose your merc setup based on what areas you want to achieve, like hitting last IAS breakpoint, getting more damage, or maybe even having your merc survive longer to tank, all this is dependent upon you and your gaming style.

We are going to start with the two (2) main items that are commonly used by both mercenaries, that would be the armor and the helm. The following link will provide you with all the information that you need to know about the items listed. http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/

Treachery Runeword Armor: 3 Socket Armor: Shael, Thul & Lem (In specific order)
There is alot of mention towards this armor being extremely good for mercenaries. Fade, IAS and FHR always helpful towards your mercenary.
When random rolling an Eth Armor and getting 3 sockets only, do not be distressed, this makes for a great armor for Treachery.

Fortitude Runeword Armor: 4 Socket Armor: El, Sol, Dol & Lo (not io) (In specific order)
This is best created in an Elite LIGHT armor, for manoeuvrability (FRW), great defense and less strength requirements, you can make them in Elite MEDIUM armors, but the strength requirements and manoeuvrability (FRW) might be an issue. Note: Ethereal Bugged Armor for your merc, and Non eth Armor for your character.

Andy's Visage (pref Ethereal)
Well this is the most preferred helm to use on most mercs, it has Life Steal, 20% IAS, +2 Skills and of course Strength.
Optional Helms:
There are many optional helms...

Rogue: Fire or Cold:
This merc is specifically included on the basis that she will be using Faith to aid your Frostmaiden with IAS breakpoints. This merc is not affected by "Iron Maiden" and is very versatile when doing Chaos, Level 3 Worldstone and Throne Room when "Oblivion Knights" are present.

Faith Runeword Bow: 4 Socket Bow: Ohm, Jah, Lem & Eld (In specific order)
There are three (3) bows that I will recommend in using for merc when making Faith. Personally I prefer the Great Bow.
#1 Great Bow(pref 15%ed): This bow is fast, has great average damage, and the requisites are easy for Rogue to weild.
#2 Diamond Bow(pref 15%ed): This bow has good speed and very good average damage, the requisites are also good.
#3 Hydra Bow(pref 15%ed): This bow, has good speed and great damage. 134 Strength req:
................... A naked L82 Rogue from Normal (str: 134, dex: 203) meets the requirements of all elite bows: Provided by Faelwen

Merc Weilding Faith Statistics
- Fanatic Aura Lvl13 = Party Damage +% (127) / Attack Speed +% (32) / Attack +% (100)
- Fanatic Aura Lvl14 = Party Damage +% (135) / Attack Speed +% (33) / Attack +% (105)
- Fanatic Aura Lvl15 = Party Damage +% (144) / Attack Speed +% (33) / Attack +% (110)

Act 2 Mercenaries:
These mercs are commonly used with a number of builds. There can be one (1) or two (2) minor problems with this merc depending on the area in which you are gaming.
#1: Stygian Dolls: Corpse explosion can make mince meat out of Glasscannons and on occassions Vita when Amped.
.... Found when getting to Mephisto, Nihlathok (good areas magic finding), another common area is the Throne Room when levelling.
#2: Iron Maiden: This is common amoung chaos'ers, also other area's where there are Oblivion Knights.
....Worldstone Keep L3, Throne of Destruction, and Furnace of Pain (Uber Izual's hideout) are the other areas occasionally containing Oblivion Knights: Provided by Faelwen

Might Aura: This is the "Offensive" merc in Act 2 Nightmare Difficulty ONLY
This merc gives you approximately another 200% enhanced damage, for those that want more damage.
Holy Freeze Aura: This is the "Defensive" merc in Act 2 Nightmare Difficulty ONLY
This merc slows down enemies quite effectively, giving you time to re-locate your zon into a good attacking position or recasting your Valk or Decoy.
Prayer Aura: This is the "Combat" merc in Act 2 Normal/Hell Difficulty ONLY
This merc helps with gaining life/mana, commonly used with a "Spinner" for Ubertrist levelling.

Act2 Merc Weapons:
You will have to test some of the weapons for your game style and what area of the game you will be gaming the most. The best example I could give you, is Chaos'ing, most people know that Iron Maiden is the bane for any high damaging melee character/merc, you will basically have to adapt your gaming style in a way to keep him behind you while you kill the Oblivion Knight that is casting, or cast Decoy at him so that he casts Decrepify... or oldschool strategy "Divide & Conquer"... there is no real other way that you can stop Iron Maiden from killing your ACT2 Merc... you can reduce his weapon damage by using low damaging items while also adding DR items like Vamp Gaze and Valor armor... but that would not benefit you that much when you game.

Non ethereal Polearms with minimum to medium damage are good for chaosing. (remember, merc can still die)
Ethereal Polearms with the best damage for merc tanking.

Pride: What can I say, the Concentration Aura increases yours and your valks damage and helps with uninterruption.
Infinity: Well, if you want to reduce monsters res to deal more cold damage, this is ideal, but remember, they have to be IN-RANGE.
Insight: Simply basic, if you need the mana, then this is a good weapon to have on merc... personally, your ML should be more than enough
Reapers Toll: Decrepify sure does help with Physical Immunes and a number of other areas.
...............Source procing AD (e.g. Atma's Scarab) is preferred over Decrepify, because AD is twice as effective as Dec for lowering damage resist: Provided by Faelwen

Increased Attack Speed (IAS)
Use TitanSeal's Attack Speed Calculator: Link Provided by Faelwen
http://diablo3.ingame.de/tips/calcs/speedcalc_titanseal/speedcalc_english.php

Damage Formula Table:
I just added this section for those that wanted to calculate the physical damage of these setups based on Vita, Dex (glasscannon) or Hybrid Vita/Dex build.
As for the cold damage, it will show on your character screen when or if you have decide to build one.

-=~@~=- Section Three -=~@~=-

Common Inventory Small Charms:
All Prefix/Suffix mods for charms link: http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/magic/
.. For more life... Small Charm of Vita = 16-20 Life
.. For more res... Shimmering Small Charm = +3-5% to all resistences
....Combined... Shimmering Small Charm of Vita = +3-5% to all resistences / 16-20 Life (Perfect ones are called 5/20's or 20/5's)
.. For single res: Sapphire (cold) | Ruby (fire) | Amber (light) | Emerald (poison) Small Charm = 10-11% resistence
....Can be combined with: of Vita = 10-11 single res / 16-20 life.
.. For more Magic Find... Small Charm of Good Luck = 6-7% Magic Find
.. For more Physical Damage... Fine Small Charm = 1-3 damage / 10-20 attack rating
....Combined... Fine Small Charm of Good Luck = 1-3 damage / 10-20 attack rating / 6-7% magic find

..Skillers are a good option also... use the link to see what other mods you would like to use for your build

Name Branding: Other Inventory Setups:
I have decided to "Name Brand" Inventory Setups for the Frostmaiden, maybe they can be used with other builds.

The basic inventory items will be your torch, anni and cube, this will leave you with thirty three (33) single slots.
You can opt to include Gheeds for more mf, or one (1) or two (2) Skillers, this is upto your final setup and what you want to acheive.
You may even want to use Sharp Large Charm of Dexterity/Strength

Iron Frost/Icemaiden Inventory:... Suitable with Might/Pride Setup
33x Fine Small Charms of Winter are what you want to get best results.
Iron N Light Frost/Icemaiden Inventory:... Suitable with Might/Pride or Might/Infinity Setup
12x Fine Small Charms of Winter: Keeping a minimum freeze length of three (3) seconds in Hell Difficulty
21x Fine Small Charms of Storms: Added Ligtning Damage... Useful for the Infinity Merc (dependent on gaming area)
Ice Queen Inventory:... Suitable with Might/Infinity or Rogue/Faith Setup
33x Hybernal or Boreal Small Charms of Winter: Pure cold damage, hence her being the Queen and not a Maiden
Fire N Ice Maiden Inventory:... Suitable with Might/Infinity or Rogue/Faith Setup
12 to 16 Hybernal or Boreal Small Charm of Winter: High quantity of added cold damage and freeze length in Hell difficulty
17 to 21 Flaming or Smoking Small Charm of Incineration: Added Fire damage for those pesky Cold Immunes
Elementalist Frostmaiden Inventory:... Suitable with Might/Infinity or Rogue/Faith Setup
11x Hybernal or Boreal Small Charm of Winter
11x Flaming or Smoking Small Charm of Incineration
11x Shocking or Arcing Small Charm of Storms

Windforce Other Item Comparison Table:... Changing Trav's to Gores... Add 10 strength
This table only show some of the other items you can use, there are alot more not even mentioned. I will at a later date add in another table with some other setups.
IAS breakpoints based on either merc setups: Faith wielding Rogue and Might Aura Merc wielding Pride polearm

The following table is using the runeword ICE in a Grand Matron Bow, the items are setup for reaching certain IAS breakpoints only.
It is just a general information table for those that want to see it setout... yes you can opt for different items, like using ICE Matriachal Bow.
