Also note there is a $5 fee to buy the game which you must do in order to buy a subscription for the game after your 21 day trial. You are able to upgrade your account to a non trial account anytime during your 21 day trial. Fear not as those 30days will then get added ontop of your 21 days. $5 fee is only applied to subscription plans on account management. If you use plex or a retail boxxed edition there is no fee. Upgraded 3 accounts (1 commissioned officer edition and 2 by way of plex) and no fee's on any of them.

Yeah that's what I recently had found out. I didn't know that by using a plex you didn't need to pay that fee, which is nice!

also, in case people get frustrated like i did.... the dev post on the forum about reverse redeeming and using the plex to upgrade from the website is wrong. you can't use a reverse redeemed plex on the website with a trial account so you just use the plex in game to add the 30 days and it upgrades the account. I've done it on two accounts with no problems, and just got a reply to my petition stating "this is not the intended method for using plex to upgrade trial accounts and the developement team thanks you for bringing it to our attention. This issue is being looked into and will be remedied as soon as possible." But it definitely works...
