That is the concept of a sandbox. EVE Online has tons of tools that you can use to play the game in your own way.
Want to be a con man and scam people or infiltrate corporations and pull off heists that might earn you fame? Go ahead.
Want to just PvE and eventually do the hardest missions and complexes in EVE and feel proud of it? Go ahead.
Want to PvP and blow up enemy ships? Go ahead.
Want to be a pirate and yell 'YARR' in local as you kill someone and then eventually stop killing him and demand some ISK to let him go free? Go ahead.
Want to be a miner and get minerals? Go ahead (but it's the most boring profession ever.... although the easiest to get into)
Want to be a trader and work with margins, buy orders, sell orders, etc? Go ahead.
Want to be a manufacturer and create ships that almost everyone uses in the game? Go ahead.
the possibilities are endless... but don't get me wrong - all of them create ISK, require ISK, and most of all require your effort. It is my advice that you choose something you want to do.
p.s. best noob profession to get into that learns a lot about aggression mechanics and perhaps some pvp is canflipping. best results if done in caldari space. google 'eve online canflipping' . this is how i started out in eve.
