Does your choice of race background and so on play a big part latter on in the game.

For example: is there a specific race that is most siuted for a pirate/miner/trader and so on?

No. It only matters early game. And even then, barely at all.

yes. your race very much does matter. seeing as some races specialize in say rail guns or missiles. like caldari most there boats give extra mods to missiles effects. Every race has its own strengths and weakness. hybrid is terrible idea unless your alrdy years into the game and you are maxed out on 1 race already. not enough time to share the skill Que with other skills
(pick a direction and dont detour) and still in most cases when people want to play multi races they make a Alt account for that other race. so they are not haven to stop there actual skills for another set up.

people cross train often, im a caldari pilot, i trained into a drake then a raven, i use my raven for level 4s (cruise missles) and now im training up armor skills to get into a heavy assault crusier for amarr (sacriledge) it only takes about 4 days for amarr frigate 4 and 29 days or so for amarr cruiser 5, so if you wanted to switch races into a smiliar ship (shields railguns to shields auto cannons (caldari to mimitar)) it'd take a month or more, theres universal skills like battlecruiser and assault ships and heavy assault ships, if you train for 1 you just need to train a few things under it

in the end, no it doesnt matter, but if you want to fly amarr pick amarr at start or caldari or gallente or mimitar

only differance is when you start training caldari, other faction ships might not use any of the things you've been training if you want to train a different faction

little tip to help - gallente use drones and blasters(close range high damage) and armor, caldari use rail guns and missles and shields, amarr use lazors or missles and armor, mimitar use autocannons artilery and armor or shields (you can switch any of these, but the ship might not give bonuses to them or might not work effectively at all) caldari is good at pve and amarr is good at pvp (not 100% but that's the way ive heard people talk)

Miners would be better as a shield tanking race just because you want to use your lows for mining laser upgrades.

Outside of that the tl;dr version is no. As long as you specialize or train support skills for whatever race you do chose you will be fine.

Mini = best solo (Vaga hugin raiper rock)
Amarr = Best T2 Cruisers (damnation and zealot ftw)
Caldari = Best of the mission whores ( can chose damage type ) , good dread for killing pos towers as well
Gallente = best in general , i dont care for their t2 cruisers but their t1 bs's (and their bigger verions) are very pro... and drones are very end game useful items as far as Carriers / Super Carriers go

of course all these are open to the pilots own opinion on what you like.

I would say it does not matter on the fact that when you pick one, you dont know enough about the game to know waht your doing.....

each race can succeed, (just by different means)

Minmatar = very SP-heavy as they use every kind of strategy in many ships (shield-tank, armor-tank, etc), also have many ships specialized for speed (stabber, vagabond, faction frig, machariel (sp?)). also has the best t1 frig... Rifter.
Amarr = THE race for armor-tanking ships. they also use lasers and have many great ships but ultimately they have the best t1 battleships.
Gallente = THE race for drones. many ships use drones and some popular setups for many of their ships are 100% reliant on drone DPS to get the job done. just look up the neutdomi setup.
Caldari = THE race for missiles and shield-tanking. this is also THE mission-running race as missiles in general are the best way to combat PvE.

the only difference in the choice of a race is already said in this thread - just gives you respective frig skill at 3 plus the respective weapon skills... and i think gallente gets drones skill right? i forgot.

It only really matters if your into roleplaying. Any race can fly any ship with the right skills. Any race can use any agent with the right standing.
Only thing that matters is what you train =)

Welcome btw
