yes. your race very much does matter. seeing as some races specialize in say rail guns or missiles. like caldari most there boats give extra mods to missiles effects. Every race has its own strengths and weakness. hybrid is terrible idea unless your alrdy years into the game and you are maxed out on 1 race already. not enough time to share the skill Que with other skills
(pick a direction and dont detour) and still in most cases when people want to play multi races they make a Alt account for that other race. so they are not haven to stop there actual skills for another set up.
people cross train often, im a caldari pilot, i trained into a drake then a raven, i use my raven for level 4s (cruise missles) and now im training up armor skills to get into a heavy assault crusier for amarr (sacriledge) it only takes about 4 days for amarr frigate 4 and 29 days or so for amarr cruiser 5, so if you wanted to switch races into a smiliar ship (shields railguns to shields auto cannons (caldari to mimitar)) it'd take a month or more, theres universal skills like battlecruiser and assault ships and heavy assault ships, if you train for 1 you just need to train a few things under it
in the end, no it doesnt matter, but if you want to fly amarr pick amarr at start or caldari or gallente or mimitar
only differance is when you start training caldari, other faction ships might not use any of the things you've been training if you want to train a different faction
little tip to help - gallente use drones and blasters(close range high damage) and armor, caldari use rail guns and missles and shields, amarr use lazors or missles and armor, mimitar use autocannons artilery and armor or shields (you can switch any of these, but the ship might not give bonuses to them or might not work effectively at all) caldari is good at pve and amarr is good at pvp (not 100% but that's the way ive heard people talk)
