alot of the time you will see 20 - 50 thousand people on at 1 time on the same server in the same world. there are alot of player that have been playing since 2003. pvp is fun but comes at a price if you lose you lose your ship and possibly a your pod. you will NOT get your ship back if it is destroyed. the best you could hope for is insurance rate that will give you money when your ship is destroyed. if you lose your pod you will have to go update you clone at a medical station. to come in is hard at first because the game is completely skill oriented. there are no lvls and your character is just a face you dont see him/her walking around(yet.....they have plans for it). skills are trained in real time so even when you logoff your skill is still training. also you cannot train more then 1 skill at a time.

You can never "catch up", it is literally impossible, because just about everything relies on how good your skills are, and skills train in REAL TIME, so everyone is training and you can never have more than the older players than you basically. You can do things right away, level 1 missions, mining, things lke that, but it'll take you about 4-5 months before you can do anything especially worthwhile, and it goes on from there.

Not trying to discourage you, but that's just kinda how it goes, it can be very fun, but it can also be horridly boring while you wait for your skill to train so you can fly your ship properly. (Skills have 5 levels, the 5th level, required to pilot or use certain things and required to get other skills sometimes, START at about 5 days of real time to train. Thats for the very lowest rank of skills (1). Rank 2 skills take 10 days of real time, rank 3 take 15, rank 4 take 20, rank 5 take 25, and so on all the way up to rank like 16 I think for Titan usage. This is for taking skills to level 5 though. Level 4 is 5 times less time, so 1 day for a rank 1 skill, then level 3 is 5 times less than that, so about 5 hours)

This is if you have good learning skills though, they do take a lot longer with poor ones, and it'll take you a month or two to get good learning skills to increase your training speed.

If you do decide to though, the only way to "catch up" isn't really to catch up but is to instead take advantage of the fact that most people have a lot of waste in their skills, they train things they want but don't use a lot, or train for multiple types of ships. You can get places a bit faster if you do a TON of research on the game (it has an intense learning curve), and plan exactly what you want to be doing before hand.

It's a game that takes time to become amazing at...but that doesn't mean it is a bitch to start in. You can be in PvP within 2 days with the proper skills trained. The time it takes for a skill to train isn't so bad once you know what you're doing and you do it. Try out the trial, join a corporation and see how you like it.
