It reminds me a little of Privateer back in the day.
In terms of MMO's, I find it hard to compare to anything. It's incredibly open ended, with a very strong economy (variables like location, supply/demand, etc play a *much* larger role in EVE than they do in most MMO's).
It's definitely a game that caters to people who like to plan things in advance, and research different options. The start is a bit slow, and the tutorial is overwhelming (and absolutely necessary, you will be completely lost if you skip it), but if you like a very open ended game, where you can progress/make money in pretty much every way you can imagine, with strong alliances and politics (if you choose to participate in them), along with a space theme, you should find EVE the kind of thing you've been looking for.
