The eve university wiki is great, especially when you need a decent template for a nice low skill fit.

As far as money goes don't fly anything you can't afford to lose.

This is a good time to start because hulkageddon is just about to begin

some tips for a begginner ( some might sound stupid but we never know :p )

always have something in your skill queue ( know what ship u want to fly and what fitting u will use so you can start skilling for it right away for it and avoid wasting skill time)
do the tutorials (skip the mining one ... )
do not open yellow cans or yellow wrecks ( you will be shot by other pilots)
do not go in space under 0.5
be careful with contracts ( a lot of them are scams)
do not shoot anyone in >= 0.5 space unless you know what you are doing)
if u don't know what to skill for u can always train these to V: electronics, engineering, drones, gunnery, mechanics, hull upgrades, spaceship command, signature analysis, shield management, shield operation...

jsp related:
DO NOT TELL ANYONE INGAME YOU TRADED ISKS ON JSP (it's bannable)
DO NOT SHARE YOUR CHARACTER NAME ON JSP (unless u trade with someone, but via pm only)
DO NOT SHARE YOUR ACCOUNT NAME
ask for your jsp buyer for a "safe trade" for big amounts (not that he will scam you but CCP can look at your transactions and see if there is something weird and might ban you)

that's all I have in mind atm :p

welcome to eve btw

Remember to download : Evemon for pc and if ur on mac dl Evetools

And pyfa for fitting on both platforms

And remember to ask experienced players if u have questions, not some random noob in local (they might try to get u into trouble)

Ok, update so far.

I have my rifter and have it setup according to a pirate guide i read and breezed through the lvl 1 military missions in the first base i came to in game. My question is should i continue to do the military missions or move on to another mission?

You want to stick with security, probably, as they have the best payout. Stick with a mission type that matches your ship set / playstyle.
If you're a miner, do mining missions
If a hauler, do courier
If a pew pew PvP / combat flier, do Security.

Here's how you fly a Ritter with a new character for those missions :) this is the last mission from the military agent, the one you are using now:

also, dont buy some absurd ship and fly around highsec showing off your extremely expensive components.

when i played this game heavily, we would load up a bunch of battleships with T1 garbage and suicide gank people doing missions in really retardedly expensive ships in highsec.

Easy pickings and extreme profit ;).
