Best advice I can give you, is use the trial to learn to play (and maybe a month or two after that), then buy an account.  The skill system is very frustrating to new players, and buying a decently skilled pilot from someone else makes the game experience a LOT better in the early days.  Training learning skills is brutal.

bad advice imo, you need to work your way up... otherwise you have no value to what you are doing

That's not true at all. There's nothing to say you need to fly an expensive ship with expensive mods just because you have a character with good skills. Do the trial, learn to play, buy a character with basics and learnings done, and then fly around in cheap ships while you learn tactics and strategy.

Well, that's the thing though. With EVE's skill setup, the fixed time based training, and subscriptions, you can actually come out ahead financially buying a character, rather than all the subscription time to train it. It's taste of course -- but the other option is you can buy a character for in game ISK, so you could do it without wasting any cash at all.
