This. You really can't decide what you would want to do right away. There is just so much to do in this game. Please don't be discouraged by the steep learning curve when you first start
This game takes about 1-3 months (Depending who you are) to actually get a grip around. Don't be one of those guys who get in the tutorial, and quit a day or two later because they have no idea what to do

Ask questions! Either on Jsp on in your NPC corp where you will start. Most users on jsp are glad to help, but some are deceitful and will try and get you banned. Watch out for them.

Most of the time, the Eve Community is glad to help. Basically #'s = Power (most of the time) So if someone can take you under their wing then you'll basically become an well trained asset

Yes, the Core Competency Certificates are very useful when you are starting out. They are boring to train at first, but you will be glad that you did.

I'd suggest getting battlecruiser of your favorite race, and get your Engineering skills up to 4/5



basically the races mean:
Minmatar : Projectile
Caldari : Missiles
Amarr : Energy Weapons
Gallente : Hybrid Weapons / Drone Boats

you want to make sure, if you are planning to go PvP, each ship has it's own purpose.
Pirate Faction ships are very fast.
Navy Ships usually have 30% more base tank and an extra slot or two.
A ship's skill basically effects what's best to use it with.
