I would have to agree with Awod on there being a huge story, although in game most people don't notice it, as most of the quests and such are only done in order to obtain an item or access to a new area, and most people rush through them without following the dialogue or reading the books.... A lot of the story is found outside of the game though, so it is really up to you how much of it you want to delve yourself into.
on a side note, if you like hack and slash games like diablo, this is essentially the same scenario, just with a lot more than 8 people, no level cap, a better gp economy, and you CAN lose levels and/or items when you die.
The biggest problem with Tibia for most is getting past the old school graphics, which for others is one of the main reasons they play. Gameplay wise it is worth it to try though, just remember that until level 8 you are on Rookguard, which is like a tutorial in any other game, so dont expect it to get amazingly fun until you can actually start using spells and such (every class has spells, just some are more dominant with spell using than others).
