For a mage, I'd recommend putting your first 5 or 10 points into vita for a bit more life then the rest into int.
As for gear, all charms average the same so just get the ones with the most ee you can. Many people use max mana gear at lower levels then switch to pure int around 10 or 15 (or higher or lower, depending on your gear). Also, you should get a set of heal charms as well because it's pretty much expected that casters should also have heals
