When welling, does it matter what tier the item is your dropping into the well?
like say i want to get level 45-55 items, would i need to drop the equivalent level item in the well?

The main drop will always be the item you throw in. But the side drops depend on your char level, and it's generally accepted that from 60 - 65 is the best level range to well because you can find 55 items

hmm that seems to be slightly wrong. it does not matter what lvl ur char has. the item u throw in determines the highest lvl of the items that will get dropped by the wellmob.
eg.: u throw in a lvl 40 with char lvl 40, max itemslvl will be 40 on the drops.
u throw in a lvl 40 with charlvl 65+, max itemlvl will be 40 on the drops.

if u thro in a 55 item, u can get 55 items from the well.

easy to see, if u throw a lvl 5 item into well at much higher lvl, u will get maximum tier 4 items

When I used to actually do wells I never noticed that item level mattered. I used to get level 55 side drops from lower level items. The only thing that mattered was your character level. It used to be that monsters in the well could be 5-10 levels higher than you, and it also used to be you can only find items 10 levels below you because level 1-4 dropped tier 1, 5-9 dropped tier 1 and 2 etc.. But I think the whole system has changed. And I haven't been able to well at all since I started playing again. I think that you can get 55 side drops from lower level items still as long as you are level 60+. Could be incorrect though.

You can get 1 tier above what you drop in (side drops)

If you drop a lvl 40 in, max item you can get from a side drop is 45.... you will also see the 40 in the top left spot.
