Magician is a fun class indeed, although it can be a bit more complicated (as well as expensive) than say a pure melee type such as Fighter/Barbarian or even Rogue.

Here are a few pointers:

Put ~10 points to Vitality, this will help increase your puny HP pool
Put the rest into Intelligence as you level, this boosts not only your mana pool, but the power of your damage charms as well as heals.
Learn to love your Shrine! It will keep your HP/MP bar filled and you will be making plenty of trips to town to shrine junk items. Just dont throw your good stuff in.

Look for Damage Charms with +Enhanced Effect, the higher the better, as this enhances the damage they do.
Look for Heal Charms with +Enhanced Effect also, as this enhances the heals.
Look for Weapon/Armor with +Mana at the lowest levels, this will help keep you casting/healing and shrining less often.
Look for Weapon/Armor with +Intelligence (and/or +Heal Mastery) at mid to higher levels.
Enhanced Effect stat only enhances what it's on, so using an "EE" armor won't boost a Heal Charm, and so on.

These are just a few basics. There is a lot more to it, but this will get you started, feel free to post here or PM me if you have any other questions/concerns.
