Best char to build? And I don't plan to spend any fg on it as this is just to try something different. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks. And also need helpful hints on what's good and what isn't lol.

It will be difficult for you to not spend any forum gold and still be successful, but it has been done.

This link will help you with the basics of Ladder Slasher : http://ladderslasher.d2jsp.org/
There are also all the LS Guides which are helpful : Ladder Slasher Guide Collection
- In the guide topic, there are guides to what items will sell, to respond to your last question. There are also some character guides and a whole bunch of goodies!

I'd suggest making a rogue. They can use the largest array of weapons and armors and thus will be easiest to equip on your journey to 71.
Look for weapons with enhanced effect and armors/charms with strength and or dexterity.
If you happen to find a nice heal charm with enhanced effect, toss it on your Accessory Slot
Note : Charms put in the accessory slot with strength or dexterity do NOT add to your total strength or dexterity (or any magical attribute for that matter) Only enhanced effect is effective in this slot, and your charm's damage will be at 75%

Enhanced effect from armor or charms will not add to your total damage (unless you are a caster, in which case EE on your charm will assist your damage) Enhanced effect on your armor
solely increases your magical and physical defense.

Feel free to PM me with anymore questions about this game :)

What do you mean by "The charms"

The ones in the Accessory Slot? Or just any in general?

There are two main types of charms, but many more options, basically try to think of them in terms of Melee or Caster. Melee will have stats on them such as +STR or +DEX as a main mod, with other things like +Critical Strike, +Life, +Quick Draw, +Glancing Blow, etc, as good secondary mods. They are only useful in the Main Slot, the only stat that works in the Accessory Slot is Enhanced Effect, and is typically used for Heals.

Caster charms usually have Enhanced Effect as their main stat, to boost the damage or heal power of the charm. Good secondary mods would be +INT or +Heal Mastery, as well as +Mana, +Magic Luck, +Critical Strike, +Mana Syphon to name a few.

Now knowing that, any charm can fall into those two categories (or not at all if it is not very good) and it makes little difference what type (earth, fire, heal, ice, wild heal) unless your class can only use one type of charm. Headhunters for example can only use Lightnings and Wild Heals, so they are more limited than say a Paladin that can use Any charm.

If you have any more questions feel free to shoot me a PM, always up to helping new faces. :)
