I want to get gear for just pure caster and rather not melee so I was wondering if being a healer / caster on sammy is a terrible idea.

its not a terrible ideea , you can heal / cast like a magician or warlock :P but only diference with samy its low mana , but in this new update you can take shrine and go regen quicky fast :) so isnt any problem. Have fun with ur samy B)

realistically, its absolutly horrible,

can you do it? yes,,

are you a detriment to the team if you go caster sammy vs meele sammy? absolutly.

its up to you.
