int effects your caster dmg

hm only effects heal but does double~ what int would do for heals

for hybrids HM is a better add for chains

You can look at this, but it's quite advanced --> http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=29065818&f=272

If you're going to use it for a hybrid, and you plan on soloing, I would go with more intelligence, since it also adds to your defense, while heal mastery only aids your heals.
If you plan on only going into catacombs, or being a straight healer only, use heal mastery.

Just my two cents

If you are only interested in healing capacity, you can calculate roughly as follows:

Take your Int, then add 100 (Example:100 int + 100 = (200 Int-value))

Take your HM, then add 100 (Example: 10HM + 100 = (120 HM-value))

Calculate Int-Value / HM-Value (Example: 200/120 = 1,66)

In this example each additional HM-Point equals 1,66 Points in Int.

Next example: Paladin with 70 Int and 30 HM: 170/130 = 1,31
In this example each additional HM-Point only equals 1,31 Points in Int!

But Intelligence not only increases charm-Power wich HM doesn't butalso adds to magical Def (+ stronger def vs caster-based crits, but here i dont know the facts).

Conclusion:
- If you want to heal in catas with a mage, you stand back anyway (dont need much def) & you have better HM/int ratio: take HM-Gear
- If you are a Hybrid standing mid or front: take Int-Gear

For best effect, int ~= hm

if you have 40int and 100hm, adding 40int will have a greater effect than adding 40 int
if you have 40hm and 100int, adding 40hm will have a greater effect than adding 40 hm

HM is usually noticed as having a larger effect since USUALLY people have more int than hm (on mages / guardians at least, which used to be built often as pure healers)
