how does one each work on your heals?
for instance, what's better, 20int on a weapon or 20 heal mastery?

Most probably 20 HM since you already have intel

Massive intel or massive HM will give you decent heals... But a combo at 50/50 ish will make your heal the highest...

int gives magical defence though...

I'd be very careful about anything by autism, his maths is a little suspect.

I recommend listening to J_B instead.

If you have two items and you want to compare them, add the values into the following forumla. whichever gives a higher number is the best.

(.95 + int/100)(1 + ee/100)(1 + hm/100)

in other words, for best efficiency have hm = int.

int will usually show a bigger benefit though, since you're likely to have much more int (from statting) than HM
