I can't seem to cook herring fish

my fishing prof is level 4 ( just started to catch herring fish )

my cooking prof is level 1

sardine fish no longer yield exp for me, but i've tried to cook over 50 herring fish now with only 2 successful cooks.

Can anyone help me out? am I missing something?

Edit : seems if i stop cooking, it will give me some experience

YEP just cook as far as you can go before flame counter get to the end on the herring fish.
