I've been wondering, where do you find good items / what level is the best level to go looking for them?

Muting/ welling is really the best way. But any level really to find "good" items, you just have to be lucky.

What is Muting/Welling?

"Transmuting

You can use the transmutation box to extract Magical (or higher) Essence from magical+ items. Once you get essence, you can combine it with another magical+ item of the same tier to reroll that item.

- When you extract the Essence from an item, you have a chance to get from magical to the magical level of the item. For instance, if you extract an Angelic item, you have a chance to get Magical, Rare, Mystical, or Angelic Essence from that item.

- When you combine Essence with an item, it's important to try and match the magical of the item with the essence for optimal effect. If you combine an Angelic item with an Angelic Essence, you are almost guarenteed to get a rerolled Angelic item. If you combine a Magical Item with an Angelic Essence, you have a chance to get a Magical, Rare, Mystical, or Angelic rerolled item."


"Well of Evil

The Well of Evil provides a chance to convert plain white items into magical items. Throwing the item into the well will awaken a powerful beast from within. These monsters are much more difficult than other monsters in the game, but when you defeat it, you will receive your item back with at least one magical stat on it."

I'm now doing 'Well of Evil' @ lvl 5 with my barbarian with 1k life.

no, you need to be a higher lvl. Side drops(or regular drops) are about 10 lvls lower then what your char is. So if you are lvl 25, the highest lvl that will drop will be a lvl 15(although, very rarely, a lvl 20 will drop). So ideally you want to be lvl 64 for welling(well monsters are higher lvl then you).

The secret to finding good items is playing a lot. The more mobs you kill the more chances you have of something good dropping personally I've found the best items in arena, but I've also found good ones in wells and know people who have found super godly stuff in catacombs. So it's really just all about the luck of the draw
