If you have no fg at all to invest, it can be hard to start off with an offensive caster

But such a character can be one of the most effective to gain some capital in your early times.
Melee can be extremely hard as well if you cant deal enough damage,
but it should be easier to slash your way along the lower levels to make your first fg.
You may e.g. find gear to sell for the glyphers, transmuters and such.
Its only 1fg per item, but it will accumulate and allow you to upgrade your gear slowly.
An option could be a healer mage or guardian to support others in catacombs.

( you can find tanker guides in the big link at the bottom )
In times of catacomb runs, things are much more easier though. But still, dont expect it to be easy.
The gear is a central part and you need to make this up with even more effort then.
