I would recomend adding some Vit at start also to increase your base life and your overall defense :)

any item withs Vit and Int bonuses help

you will need a EE Heavy armor and str charm with EE Weap

yes a tanker can melee, what they were meaning by intelligence is that they receive additional defence from casting attacks.

I personally would go with a barb to tank, they have such a high base amount of vitality that it is really hard to compare with any other character.

Stat your vitality until you have around 100 base points, then stat the rest into strength. Get an enhanced effect plate, an enhanced effect axe and a +strength charm and you'll be loved when in catacombs :D

Feeder = Barb... At start your stats should look like this (starting with 10 points)
60 Strength
30 Dexterity
05 Intelligence
65 Vitality ... Why 5 here: Simple... 4% Enhanced Defense and More base life

Tanking Items that you require to be more effective:
Intelligence is definately the main requirement for this build... 35+ is sufficient
Vitality is another requirement... for every 20 points you get 19% Enhanced Defense (0.95 per vita point)... 15+ is sufficient... more is better
Dexterity... this is what you will be pumping every other point into UNLESS you have an item that gives you 25+ Dexterity.

Ideal Stats by level 60:
060-xxx Strength (60 is fine for barb)
110-120 Dexterity
040-0xx Intelligence
080-0xx Vitality
______________

Edit... sorry you also need the best EE possible PLATE/chain...

Not quite... to tank... you should be able to take the least amount of damage possible for the build.

Dexterity... this helps with two (2) things... Defense against Physical Crits done to your character.... Critical attacks Vs Monsters.
... Dexterity is what you will be pumping all the way through UNLESS you have Dexterity on your items (wpn/armor/charm)

Let us see... if by level 55 your items have 25 Dexterity Each (75 Total)... now add in your Base 25 = 100... so you need to add 10 points do dexterity
... If you only want to reach 110 dexterity....

So... starting (10 points)
60 Strength
25 Dexterity
05 Intelligence
70 Vitality ... since you can easily up dexterity by 10 points in the first 10 levels.

@ level 11 to 21: Add each point into Vitality to reach 80
60 Strength
35 Dexterity
05 Intelligence
80 Vitality (@ lvl21)

lvl22-lvl57: into Intelligence
60 Strength
110 Dexterity (note with your dexterity items on @ lvl55)
40 Intelligence
80 Vitality

From level 57 you can up your Strength to deal some more damage... which I would do if I had this setup.
