Curious which two characters my friend and I should start out with? I currently have a lvl 51 mage, should I just use that or should I start fresh with my friend? How does the experience get spread? Is it per party, no matter what lvl the character is?

you have to be within 3 levels of each other to join each other's catacombs
as for a combo, it doesn't really matter, you'll be joining groups with more than just you two I assume
I'd say healer or damage/tanker just so it's easy to fit in to groups

It is possible, yes. People did it more when there was no-maze catacombs, but if you're going to play solo at high levels (especially on a mage) then arena is the way to go.

You *Can* Do it..but if your objective is leveling quickly unless you are bother really fucking rich..Don't just host cata games where you two play together and then 3 other random people join in Who knows may make Another new friend that way.

If you prefer to level by yourself, the arena is the best option to do that, otherwise catacombs is essentialy made for team play and the all the objectives in it require a full game
