I don't think the monster can surpass 71
But having a monster that equals you at level 71 is a bad thing. Considering you could just stop at 64 Get 55 drops and then the monster would be weaker and easier to kill.
However if you *Surpass* 71 each level above 71 is an advantage you have over the welling monster (From what I heard)
So lets say a level 80 mage versus a level 71 welling monster it may actually end up easier on you.
However reaching level 80 would be very hard as most cata groups stop after 71 and soloing will only continue to get much harder as you progress in levels above 71...or at least thats my understanding.
(I could be wrong on that last part)
Point here is unless you plan on going well above 71 stopping at 64 is a better option.
Correction: the highest monster level in arena is 70, but the highest monster level in wells (and I believe catacombs too, but I might be wrong) is 75. So welling won't get any easier until level 75.
So since you can't summon monsters in arena past level 70 you get terrible experience fighting monsters lower than your level, which is what makes it difficult to get to 80+.
Personally, I've tried welling both at 64 and at 75+, and I found it to be significantly easier at 64. Maybe if I went a ways above level 75 it might have gotten easier, but that's pretty difficult to get significantly above 75.
Basically, I think that the best strategy is to climb your mage to 64 and then well from 64 - 71, then MQ at 71 and repeat the whole process. That way you get guild points and proficiencies - both of which you wouldn't gain if you created a suicide weller.
