Strength: Increases the base damage for melee weapons.
Dexterity: Increases your chance to critical hit, and damage dealt when you critical hit. It also reduces damage when enemies critical hit you. The effects are subject to a diminishing return formula.

Intelligence: Increases the base effect for charms. For every 25 stat points you have in intelligence, you gain +1 Mana Regen. Every Level Up you will gain an amount of mana equal to your base intelligence.

Basically, as a melee character you'll want to balance your strength and dexterity for a mix of nice damage and good critical hits / defense vs. crits. If you're a caster then you'll only want to pump intelligence (except for maybe a few of the starting points into vitality) so that you have more mana, higher damage, and better defense vs. caster mobs. If you want to play as a hybrid, then get your intelligence up to anywhere from 50 to 70 at first and then balance the rest of your points between strength and dexterity.
