if you want to cast all the way, you need max mana on low lvl ( lvl 1-15 ) then INT for higher lvls
and EE on charms to increase your dmg.

+ Mana per Attack: For each attack that deals at least 1 damage, you will recover between 1 and this value mana. This doesn't apply in the No Explore Catacombs.

It has a lot of good info for mages, and also some tips on how to level your mage until you are able to well.

I followed it, and I am on my 2nd climb!

The gear you need to buy is essentially the same. If you look in my guide (posted above me) there's a link in the beginning to another guide for leveling in cata but as I said before the gear you need is pretty much the same (except heal mastery is very useful in catas)
