profiencies are like masteries if you've played D2 :p

the more you play, the more profiencies you'll get
you have to lvl them

for ex: you've reached lvl 2 profiency in earth
so if you use an earth charm, you'll make better dmg ( EE on charm + 2% EE from the profiency )
but those bonuses are not shown on the items ( EE is not added on the item )
you only see the difference when you play with the dmg you make ;)

Yes, it is definitely best to stick with one type of weapon and charm.

Your choice is all about personal preference. If you like a wide range of damage then use swords or clubs (lightning and wind if charms) or if you like nice and consistent damage then use axes or daggers (ice or earth if charms). They're all supposed to average the same if they have the same EE though.

I'd probably go with clubs for you. They give nice higher end damage and they can be pretty cheap as well ;) and you can also use them on all the melee feeder classes.
