As far as I know it's really just the same as SC except you pump up to 50 vitality in the beginning. Don't go below half life and don't be afraid of the run button ;) I've never played HC so that's the best advice I can give you.

Pretty much correct, some people would say 45 is sufficient but remember that this is hardcore and wearing a light armor. So 50 is what I will always go for, then basically same like softcore. Try and not to well if you have basic gear also

play cautious... HC mages are hard not to die on if you let yourself get low in life

Looking good thus far. Lvl 15 charm with some EE would help. When you get to lvl 20 it would be beneficial to invest into a heal charm with EE as well.

I just started my mage the other day and Im doing great with extreme budget gear soloing :)
