I think with like a sword, if you roll under their armor value and hit a 0, some of their armor value is wasted on such a weak hit, but your average hit is still the same as with an axe, and you will get some huge hits. With an axe, you are always rolling higher than their armor value so their armor value gets 100% use. If that makes sense.
Swords has the luck advantage of rolling low attack rolls vs their high defense rolls and high attack rolls vs their low defense rolls.
Edit: And i guess staves are somewhere in between so..
this difference has nothing to do with dex
a crit does not automatically score a high end roll, it just multiplies your roll by a modifier %
so no
your weapon type doesn't mean jack shit when you're deciding how much dex you want/need
if you can determine the optimal ratio for an axe, it will be the exact same for a dagger, for a staff, for a sword, hell even for a fricken longsword it will be the exact same thing
