There is no real difference in welling tier I stuff or tier XIV. Personally, i even have more problems in welling the low tier items mostly somehow, too.

Well monsters have been adjusted to be level appropriate to both the character level, and the item you thrown in.
For example, if you are level 1, and throw in an item with tier ix ( level 30 ), it will spawn a monster at approximately level 30 and not level 1!
If you are level 30 and throw in a level 1 item, it will spawn a monster at approximately level 30 and not level 1.

In your case, which might influence the wells is your light charm.
There is a huge range between the maximum damage and the minimum damage. Thus, you may be lucky and hit for a lot damage at the high end
and kill monsters that would be too hard for you usually. But you may also be unlucky and just hit at the low end without any chance against the well monster then.
So during the last runs, you may just have been unlucky striking low all the time or fighting strong monsters e.g. with a huge int rate, life pool or striking critical hits with a lot dex.

You will not reach a 100% success rate with that gear unfortunately, so this will happen now and then.
I guess most time you loose a fight it is because you run out of mana, but your enemy has still too much life. This is a general problem on rogue,
as it lacks mana in comparison to mage. But therefore your gear is much more cheaper than similar for a mage. But mages reach high success rates quite easy therefore.
So thats the burden you have to carry now as rogue.

Apart from shifting to mage, what you can do to increase your success is just investing more into it.
If you have the fg, upgrade your armor and weapon a little to deal more damage. ( more int, max mana add if possible and such )
What is even more important is a higher heal charm with around 100EE if you can afford it and especially a higher ee charm.
If you can deal more damage, your chance to kill an enemy before your mana is empty rises. But still, a 100% pure success rate is hardly impossible unless you have really godly gear.

I completely agree with everything above, except I think that the first thing you should do is get yourself a level 50 - 55 heal charm with 90+ ee.
