I'd actually recomend against guardian regardless if you're using it for heals or melee. Mage is > healer. Barb//fighter > melee.


For healing all points into Intelligence. Int//HM gear with EE heal charm.
Melee get 100-130 dext with your MQ gear on and all other points into strength.

so should i just start over?

It's up to you, that's just my personal opinion.
Guardians can be really good with the correct builds, but never as good as mage or melee character for a pure build in either direction.
The only advantage they can get as a healer is that they can also tank.
