Well, everyone says Barbarians are the greatest characters to start off with, BUT I am surviving with a Lvl 12 Mage. To me, I think it's actually your choice, not anyone elses.

I'd say to go with fighter or barb if you like melee; mage if you like casters.

Fighter//Barb
- Make sure you can get at least 100 dext including gear by around lvl 55, all other points to strength. (can do first 10 stats to vita if you're gear isn't too great)
- Use only plate mails if possible for the higher defense.
- Use weapons with enhanced effect (EE), armors//charms with strength and/or dexterity ... EE can be a good cheaper option on armors so you can tank more hits which is helpful particularly in catacomb games.

Mage
- 5-10 of the first points into vitality, all other points throughout climb go into intelligence.
- If you'll be playing catacombs a lot, casters are basically useless if they aren't healers. If healing use intelligence or heal mastery weapon/armor and an EE heal charm ... heal mastery is far superior at least in the mid-higher levels. If playing arena, then use an intelligence weapon and armor with an EE damage charm.

i would say go with a din. which is a paladin with forcus on hammering.
str-60 if not 80
vit=rest into vit
energy=16
dex-51
hammering-20
concentration-20
vigor-20
blessed aim-20
redemption-1
in that order
