the point of making a gaurdian is so you can heal others in catacombs.
provided yes, they cost a bit of fg to get halfway decent, really all you need to buy is the different heal charms, but you dont have to have anything godly to be accepted in a group you just have to be able to heal them. EVERYBODY wants a healer, but if you try using a lvl 10 heal charm with no ee at level 50 then yeah your going to be be kicked out of alot of games, you have to keep pace with whats going on.
id say a decent healer shouldnt run you more than 200 fg or so, you can usually find 50+ ee heal charms fairly cheap.

as far as doing damage, it doesnt matter how much damage you can do as long as you can heal.
now if your thinking of solo'ing gaurdians are probably not the best char for you to make and i would suggest making a barbarian or a fighter, just out of sheer power vs gaurdian, a solo gaurd needs quite a bit more fg invested to be good.

stats- put everything into intel, your going to need as much mana as possible when you first start off, as your not going to have the best heals so you need more of them

edit~
as far as gear goes, heal mastery is cheap and effective for both a wepon and a armor - 20 heal mastery plate is about equivalent to a 40 intel plate and the heal mastery is much more cost effective - the heal charm needs to have ee on it, as much as you can afford
good luck hope this has helped

by adding the first ten points into vitality, at level 55 you have increased your life points by 550 points, and by vl 70 its 700 life points,
now take that in mana and its the same 10 points into mana = 550 more mana at lvl 55 and 700 more mana at lvl 70.
so its really your choice if you need the life or the mana.
on my rogue im healing for 1k average, so 500 life isnt alot to me whereas, 500 mana means i can heal myself for 4000 hit points with the extra mana i would have. so yeah i dont put points into vita....

the best thing to do is to try it out and see what works best with the gear you have
