For someone with 5000 fg, I have a level 8 barbarian right now (+10 vit, rest str) but I think that I might be able to do better if I put my fg to work.

If you want to go solo (fastest climbing way with FG imo) you should look to buy items like these.

Weapon: as Much ee as possible, upgrade every 5 or 10 levels. (If your putting all stats into str i would get an axe set.)
Armour: EE, Str, LS. These are the mains stats you should look for in a good armour (for MQ and lvl 30above)
Armour (lvl 1 -30): Strength, Life per kill, Life per attack, Max life.
Charm: Str, LS, Max Life.
Charm ( 1 -30): Str, LPK,LPA, Max Life.

If you want to catacomb. (your weapon profiences wont go up as much so you dont really have to always use the same kind of weapon)
You should aim to get as much ee as you can on weapons (upgrade every 5/10 lvls). As Much Str on armour (ee, Max Life is also helpfull). And as much str on charm (Max Life also helpfull). And a Heal charm with ee will also help in critical moments when youre dying (and it also helps allot with wellling)
