I just started melee, so I have questions about how, specifically, critical hits work. The guides all say "if you use swords, add to dex to get more critical hits and higher critical hits" and "if you use axes, add to strength" but I don't understand how it makes a difference if you're using swords, axes, or whatever else.

In the LS shrine, it says "Dexterity: Increases your chance to critical hit, and damage dealt when you critical hit." This would imply it gives you a % chance to crit and a % damage increase when you crit. So whether you have an axe or sword, you'll crit the same % and your crits will give the same % increase in damage, giving you the same average damage with both no matter how high/low your dexterity is.

So yeah, where am I wrong?

yes thats correct.

but u have to remember this

swords=shity min high max( more u crit the better)
axes=high min mid high( more str=more constant damage)
daggers= best weapon good min and good high (120 to 140 max dex)
i normaly stop at 100 dex(using axes) 120 to 140 with swords
