I go with at least 50 vita into a mage on hardcore...especially if you are welling. Robes and low life don't mix well with a nice crit from an item you are welling.
There have been several people who have claimed very high hits while welling items. I'd rather lose a white item than lose all the gear I had spent my fg on.
Those are just my thoughts, however.
