I am looking at some builds posted around and they all seem to depend on a few key items, which I don't have being a starter char.

Back in D2 you could build a little firewall sorc on a budget and craft some topaz socketed items and farm mephisto... is there an analogous build in D3?

thats where i looked first, and like i said it doesn't have a good listing of starter builds, only godly builds after you have acquired all the best items.

i need a build to get those items first...

Really anything is viable solo. The strongest solo are probably wiz barb and demon hunter. The monk and wd are probably strongest support and are very viable for solo farming. I don't know about crusaders currently.

Yea I agree. Monk can be built cheaply to have very good survivability because dex will boost up its dodge chance alot and there is a passive skill which boosts armor by % of total dexterity and another which will boost dodge chance by 40% of critical hit chance. So therefore with some life on hit from items (I recommend at least 7k) with fast attack speed you get from using dual fists you will dodge the majority of attacks and be able to hit alot of enemies fast with seven side strike regenerating life as you do.

With witch doctor you can use pet builds which allows you to focus on damage stats which can be acheived with cheap gear allowing your pets to tank for you while you run around casting spells.

best class for early solo farming is dh because you can craft a very good 2 hand crossbow and go for the multishot build. No other class can craft reasonable ancient weapons for solo farming. Barb is also good for farming once you get the raekors set (easy to build up so that you can speedrun farm) which is very effective for farming (I assume that you find raekors before you ll get the wastes set). Wizard really needs a good set to work out effectively (Hard to get the right weapons), same for crusader. don't know about the witch doctor.

If you want to farm solo early game, go for dh or barb ;) However i would play the class which is the most fun to you... if you don't have two computers or play with friends so that you can get some gear for other chars ...

As a general guideline: Check which build has the weapon which is the easiest to get because finding the right weapon can be THE pain in the ass :P
