What is the purpose of the PTR? - Just to get a feel for the new changes prior to them dropping?
Does anything you get in the PTR, carry over to release?

Basically is there any benefit to playing the PTR - BESIDES learning the new changes?

You get to test the changes they have made, and make during the ptr
Nothing carries to release.

Judging from the official forums, it has been a massive flop as usual.

It's a mystery to me why people even bother.

To publicly test the patch. That is the purpose of the PTR...finding bugs etc etc.

So that you can test blizzards game and inform them of balance issues that they will proceed to ignore and send to live anyways.
