If it's like D2, you could start on Bnet doing only singleplayerstyle. So make private games and finish the game on bnet as if it were singple player.
Then atleast you'd have a high level char once you really start bnet.
But if in D3 single player has bonusses which you cant have on bnet then I'll do single player first.
it just depends.
Either way, I'm playing the game through on my own first, whether in a private bnet game or not.
