I think you need passives and skills that increases health globes drop rate for it to be really effective. You could also pass up on PtV of you manage to make it good.
My impression thus far is that it's not really necessary, though I haven't tried it with skills that do increase their drop rate.
I just did some basic testing. My base dps is 67k.
1) Each globe increases my DPS by ~7k.
2) Each bonus has their individual "life span."
This means that with a stack of five globes, you actually have five separate buffs each running on their own timer.
Picking up another globe will not reset the timer for the other four.
3) I didn't test this, but I'm pretty sure that other players picking up globes gives you stacks (since the skill does say "whenever you are healed by a health globe).
I mainly play with a Monk tank and WW barb, meaning that there is a consistent stream of health globes being picked up.
4) My impression thus far has been that I have no real problem with keeping up 3 stacks at pretty much all times.
At my gear level that's a ~21k average DPS boost. It obviously scales well with int from your gear.
I tested to see if it scales with Soul Harvest and it does not. I was still getting 7k DPS boosts with each globe.
In my book, that's pretty good bang for your buck. Pierce The Veil gives me an extra 11k dps and obviously comes with the mana burden.
But at the end of the day, what else is there to take? I'm using Pierce the Veil and Spirit Vessel.
I don't use any summons so no need for those passives.
I used to play with Blood Ritual but see no point for it in 1) group games and 2) post-1.0.4.
Acid Cloud (Corpse Bomb) is my mana drain and I don't feel the need for Vision Quest.
Jungle Fortitude is obviously nice but I don't feel that I need it, especially since I got Lacunis for 24% move speed.
I toyed around with Grave Injustice for a while and it was great for my solo play style (I play a kite style with lots of CC cooldowns) due to the CD reductions.
However, I use a different skill set for group play (and I intend to pretty much play groups only post-1.0.4) and I really don't feel like it adds much.
So yeah. This Gruesome Feast thing. I'm a fan.
