if i robbed an old man and gave you the money would you be the just owner of said money?

if the item, money in this case, switches "owner" 4 times, then the last person is the rightful owner.
/edit , obv laws differ in different countrys but this law applys in most of europe atleast.

You are not looking at it in the correct terms.

If someone unknowingly got gold from another person, it is not their fault the gold was duped.

So why should they be punished?

And more importantly, how can blizzard actually reason punishing that person?

Yes if my friend robbed an old man DIDN'T TELL ME WHERE HE GOT THE MONEY (ofc he wont) and gave it to me for being a friend ofc I would be the owner.

they aren't being punished if they are just taking the gold back. that's doing what is right, removing what isn't theirs, it's not making them any worse off than they were the day before.

I don't the person who stole it does. I wouldn't have a clue that anyone was robbed. Just as in the same case as many D3 players that got gold given to them

It was for very many people at the time of it happening, including myself until it was too late.
