Any input on what I should upgrade next?

161k unbuffed dps monk without OWE.

I propose that you upgrade MY monk rather than YOURS :P but other than that, Jinshin85 is right. Just max out the little things (9% IAS, critchance Nat's ring... trifecta the crap out of everything :P)

Greetings.

I'm currently in the process of leveling my monk (2 levels left til I hit 60), and I'd like to ask for some advice before I start gearing him up.

What's the best element to base one's resistances on? What's your favorite spirit generator? I realize that fists of thunder might be the fastest, though crippling wave is my favorite for massive aoe radius.

What's your skill/rune setup? I'm currently using breath of heaven, serenity, seven sided strike (I fucking love that spell), mantra of healing, crippling wave and lashing tail kick as a support.

How do you stay alive? What's best, is it life on hit, life on spirit spent or life leech? Do you use 2h weapon, two one handers or one hander and a shield?

Any input is welcome.

Hmmm... some starting advice

1) resistance choice - fire and poison are the most expensive choices, but they have certain "shortcuts" for mid-ranged gear (fire: firewalkers, cindercoat, even the burning axe of something-something, poison: andariel's visage) which are relatively cheap for its benefits and quite easy to find... arcane/physical/lightning/cold are around the same... personally, I find cold to be the cheapest and most abundant. A recent d2jsp poll showed that cold was the least common.

2) defense - to start with, you should look for some "life on hit"... this is where the choice of fists of thunder comes in... it attacks faster, so you hit more, so you get more life back. You should look for gear with as much resistance and armor as possible along with offensive stats and/or vitality. Take the passives "seize the initiative" and "resolve", they give you the most defensive benefits. If you find things too easy, you can switch them out for something else. You want to keep defense to a minimum so that you can maximize offense.

3) offense - At first it's just going to come from dex and increased attack speed, but you should keep crit chance in mind. Your goal is to get as much crit chance as possible to raise your DPS. It won't look like much at first, but its benefits get multiplied as you get more. Under 30% crit, you should use sweeping winds: bladestorm... afterwards, it's cyclone time!

Seems like a lot to take in... and it really is... i suggest you beg Jinshin for some gearing help :P

I bet if you watch your cyclone ticks you'll see a difference, all other things being equal. But the SW itself can't crit, so that won't be affected.

Yeah i did test with quite many weapons, i have 8x different high dps 2h weapons in stash. I wathced the nado-crits for quite a while and it doesn't do any more damage than it does with my Echo+WKL. In fact, when i enable sweeping wind with my regular weapons, the criticals are a lot higher :)

The highest of those 2h weapons give me 255k dps and even with that weapon the crits are lower, not a single over 80k hit :/ But with echo/wkl the criticals go up to 120k-130k+

Hey I was wondering if you guys can help me with my monk. I want it to be able to handle the higher MPs. I can do MP5 but i do die here and there...

I plan on getting Natayla's ring and witching hour. What other suggestions would you guys have for me? Thanks

The actual cyclone electric zap is supposed to be based on weapon damage range, but won khim lau adds 25% to that... if you add 25% to your echoing fury, does it go over your 2-hander's weapon damage?

Nat's ring will be nice for you your boots, but I would hold off on the witching hour. Unless you're putting in a couple hundred mil, the WH you get is probably going to be low on defense. You only have 30K life which is ok with your armor and resists for MP3-4, but I don't advise lowering it more.

The money you'll need for a good witching hour could be used for a couple of cheaper things first. You have too little crit chance to really benefit from cyclones (need 30+) focus on getting crit chance on both your rings (ie. nat's ring and another 5-6% ring), your amulet (8%+), and your bracers (6%)

Speaking of witching hour... i had a dex/vit/9% one drop for me yesterday. I don't have the defense to use it yet :/ wondering if i should keep or sell... . . .. . . . . .

got a new ammy last night :)

going to start saving up for nat's boots and ring while also trying to roll a better (usable) hellfire ring. only thing that will deter this action is if I find a better offhand.
