Ruby tend to do 2 things well after much testing.
1. It helps in lower mp insanely well. In fact if you have a high end ruby in low mp, you will feel like you gain 20-50k dps when really you stay the same. The reasoning for this is that you do not need more crit dmg to kill white trash, because a crit should always kill a white in 1 hit anyway so why bump it more?
Instead add more minimum dmg (white base dmg) thus one hitting even more often (if not 100% of the time). This is how i manged to go from 80m / hour xp to about 115/hour on my doc and went from 75 - 100 in about a week.
2. In higher mp it does help slightly with a more stream line heal rather then a jumpy one that is seen with higher crits. Your minimum dmg is raised so you will heal at a more constant rate, thus more easily managed.
The only exception I have is if you don't have a 1.4 aps + wep, do not use a ruby because the net gain on + dmg doesn't outweigh a crit gem.
so axe or lower use emerald.
