D3 seasons are far more fun because they are different every time and offer actual challenging endgame content and worthwhile goals.
In D2 anyone can get a perfect gear set in a few days for any character and then what? Run Baal 10,000 times to 99? Get a few items that are worthless because of all the bots? Do some PvP and then get bored after 20 minutes because it's been the same since 1.10?
If the forthcoming patches to D2 crack down on bots, and do something to make the absurdly easy endgame PvM more difficult, by buffing the enemies (or even adding new content!, which would be glorious, though unlikely) and nerfing the main cookie cutter builds which would also increase viable build variety, the game could be so much fun again.
Then they could add a PvP system that is more than just pointless killing in the Blood Moor: perhaps things like matchmaking, rankings, new arenas, and rewards. Anything that makes it no longer pointless and obsolete.
I wouldn't even mind them monetizing the game with cosmetics like auras and transmogs if it means Making Diablo Great Again.
If you only pvp for 20 minutes and get bored, you're the guy gettin shit on standing on the bridge.
