its still the same old shit for the most part.
killing shit is fun
i dont really get why people are so obsessed with what other people do who cares if someone clears a higher grift than you.
unless youre some pro as fuck mofo there will always be someone ahead of you and tbh it doesnt affect the gameplay of your character at all. its just you wanting to be the best when you arent. get used to it.
i wish I was the best guitar player in the world, but im not. that doesnt mean im going to quit playing it.
tbh sometimes being the best isnt all its cracked up to be. sometimes a challenge is more rewarding.
The end game is to push leaderboards.
Leaderboards is the ranking of characters within the community.
The challenge you speak of in your last sentence is the end game content, ie; pushing leaderboards.
So you want people to enjoy the game for what it is, but ignore what the game is?
I mean, sure, if you're putting in 4-6 hours a week it would be reasonable to not care about being on the leaderboards because you haven't committed the time to ever be represented there anyways. But for people who manage their time in a way that allows them 15-20 hours or more per week to play D3, the only thing left to do after week 1 is challenge yourself by pushing leaderboards.
So if people are cheating leaderboards, or if certain classes are continuously made to be 'dead content' season after season (ie: wizard), then it has an effect on the entirety of the end game.
If the META is Monk and Barb 100% (even in 4 man parties) and your favourite class is DH or Wizard, then you have 2 choices. The first being to play your main class, ignore the end game as best you can, and be content with mediocrity. The second is you have to drop your favourite class in favour of playing the Flavour of the Month class so you can compete and not slow down your teammates/friends.
