my guess is they'll make it a $$ for gold model. then let people spend the gold on items. and you'll of course be free to grind out 5$ of gold over 10 or so hours of straight playing.
that will lead to people spending gold to buy soulbound items and prevent 3rd party shit.
blizz somehow thinks that hack and slash is what made the game popular. there was an idiot in the strat/guides section who was equally stupid, claimed the economy wasn't what made d2 popular and claimed people liked to for the pvm repetitive aspects. its all economy, its all wealth acquisition, etc. that's what people want.
Yes, yes, and more yes.
This is why I log into every D2 ladder reset. I like to play HC and farm the shit out of the game and amass wealth and sell most my shit for FG that I ultimately horde because i have a problem.
After about 3 weeks I liquidate my gear, buy a funny toon to hostile random people and fuck around for a few days until I die. Last year I would hostile baal games with a java and try and kill people in the throne room by firing LF's and guided arrows. Got a couple people that I asusme were AFK in the throne room.
