hi all, i am making a new monk.
main purpose is to be a tanker for my frds who are wiz and dh

1. what skills should i use?
2. what items should i be looking at

my budget 50-60m, maybe more if necessay

you dont need that much money for a tank, ofc you can buy sick gear for millions but reason why most ppl playing tanks with shields are that they are cheaper with more survival abilities than dual wielders.

so if you do have that much money and want it spend all on him then rather go for pure sick dual wielder maniac with tons of crit and LoH (and some attack speed ofc)

also gearing a char for 50-60mil just for friends is bad idea, play for yourself. if friends will stop playing and you wont enjoy that spec in solo then its GG

if you want to tank , you have to have alot of HP & allres , and your damage isn't that important.

also you need to have alot of armor. try to keep it above 7k if possible.
use all the passive / defensive runes of the skills and you should try to get LOH aswell.

All in all, I think 50-60m should be fairly enough to do a tanky monk.

what are ppls thoughts on end-game belts for monks?

I've used a string with 16% dr and +50 resists + 70dex + 70 LoH for a while now, and wondering if there is a point in upgrading. I thought about looking for a gg rare belt with 120 resists, ~150 dex, ~150 vit, but not sure what others are thinking.

You really grasp for anything as a monk, since  you put so much money into defense your DPS suffers. So even a 1k boost in damage will be nice since you attack faster, sweeping wind does more, and your mystic ally will too if you have one. So a 1k boost in damage goes longs ways. And I wouldn't base that damage as how much you are doing, because as I said you have to factor in the 60% sweeping wind and 40% mystic ally attacking by your side.

So I would try to hit 750 damage with same attack speed, and try to throw in some dex. I feel like the item might get quite pricey, but I got an item just as I described, except for the attack speed but with 800 LoH for 3m. And to be honest it COMPLETELY changed how I played act 3. I survived so much more and as I said, the 2k damage increase made the battles so much easier.

In my personal opinion, you can get everything beside your armor for less than 600k each if you look closely. For the weapon, you have to go all out but in the long run it pays off.

yes it will.

your armor is too low. im sitting at 6.8k and am doing fine in acts 1/2.

also gem your weapon for LoH, not Dex.

What's everyone's attack speed + main attack now? Are you still able to effectively use life on hit after nerf?

I'm at 1.86 at the moment, dual wield, and only FoT seems to work fast enough to be effective... I really wish I could replace it with deadly reach but it feels too slow and doesn't heal me fast enough with 1200 LoH

but I hate the outcome of this patch. act 1 and act 2, monsters die if i just get close to them, they melt no different than norm/nm/hell mobs.

act 3 however, while armor/resists are good enough I often die to enrage timer because am too slow to kill them :/

(~20k dps)

If you're getting killed by Desecrator fire, molten fire, plague pools and arcane lasers, chances are you are using the wrong skill.  Switch to Deadly Reach + Keen Eye rune, and learn to Shift attack vs mobs from a few feet away.  It's called Deadly reach for a reason, it has REACH.  You will no longer be standing in places that kill you.

Also, save your 3 second invisibility for when the arcane laser is almost going to hit you.  That way you don't have to stop attacking and move.  If it's not available, and you can't walk out further to avoid the lasers, walk right through them in the direction they are coming from.  It shouldn't hit you for more then half your life.  When your on the other side of the laser, heal either by BOH or a potion.  For desecrator fire or plague pools, if you happen to be standing in it, just stop attacking, take 1 step to the side, and shift attack some more.  It's pretty easy.  Try to never run away from mobs, that's when they tend to hurt you the most.  Try to always be a few feet away.  Never too close, never too far  :)

Use earth ally, and always summon him so he's standing between you and the enemy.  Since your shift attacking while standing still from a small distance, there will always be room for your meat shield to be between you.  Trust me, this helps a lot !  When I figured this out, it made area's like the Keep a total joke.  Just learn to position your ally right in the doorway, while your standing a few feet behind him shift attacking.

Of course, all this is based on you already having high enough resists, armor, and LOH to actually be able to tank a decent amount of damage.  If you're super weak, nothing will save you.  If your stats are pretty good, but are still dying, adopt my tips and you'll walk through areas where you used to get raped.

i havent had any trouble using fist of thunder until i hit the keep in act 3

so im actually using BOTH so i dont lose stacks switching back and forth

my spec right now is serenity w/transcendence, sweeping wind w/cyclone, seven sided strike w/stun, mantra of evasion w/armor, fists of thunder thunderclap (left click), deadly reach keen eye (right click)

very versatile

Your weapons attack seperately.
Open char screen.
Look at attacks per sec.
Attack 1 time.
see it changed.
Your attack speed affects the animation.
You jab fast then swing a hammer through molasses then jab again.
