This is really true. It seems like the 10% damage that they eat is not affected by their force armor, so they die quickly. Even with GI and reasonably quick farming I find myself having to recast every time the cooldown is up.
It depends, if you have good defensive spec, they don't die easily. Main thing is, they die when you take a lot of damage, this is main reason why they are weak. If you stay back and let them tank, they act like any other rune pretty much.
Also in co-op with war cry, they never die, as your survival is boosted. I had run with barb, and dogs never died through whole act 3, maybe except once 1 dog died.
Another thing is, you use them for DR, so as long as 1 of them is alive, you still get full 10% dr bonus. So if this is main reason to use them, it is all fine to recast them, just not too often, only when all are dead or one hurt is left.
