In all honesty I think Blizzard is a bit full of them selves and all of you that are die hard fans of them haven't realized they have lost their touch nor will you admit it. Just like trying to convince people the earth was round back in the 17th century. Odds of success? Very slim.
Don't get me wrong, I have every PC game associated with their name. Diablo 1 + 2 + 2LoD, SC1 + 2, WoW, WC1 - 2 - 3 + 3FT. Although I think the money has gotten to their heads and they have been releasing over hyped games for a long time now. SC2 was and still is a great game, over rated? Very. After following every single article on Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2 now for as long as I can remember, I have come to the conclusion Diablo 3 will rock your damn socks off. No doubt. Although Guild Wars 2 will change the world of MMOs / RPGs everywhere. I can't tell you how many wow players I have seen comments from and heard from at the local game shops stating that they will be changing from WoW to GW2 when it releases. That been said, I hope this forces Blizzard to sit up straight in their chairs and stop slouching as if they have no more competition and force them to produce a better game perhaps.

NOW THEN. Since everyone is way the hell off topic as is expected in a public forum because some dumb shit always drags it off topic and starts it all. Let's try and respond to the topic at hand.
A monthly fee will not reduce the number of bots that spam in your game. I've seen far less spamming bots in Guild Wars in the main and beginner cities than I have in WoW and FFXI. I think it has to do with the developers caring more about their players and wanting to keep the environment free of spammers and botters more than anything. Guild Wars is free to play, and they have managed it just fine for the past almost 6 years and they host more events than WoW does. Every single weekend something new. On top of that when I played WoW I've noticed that the events give you such little to do, and such little for your reward as apposed to GW. So I highly doubt a monthly fee will effect much other than the income of the people who work on the game. You can counter the argument by telling me that it encourages better game management but you are factually incorrect. WoW has been the same shit for the last 6 - 7 years. Just like Guild Wars. WoW has bad events and not enough of them that do not give very much in return. Guild Wars does. WoW has a shit ton of spammers even to this date. I go for months at a time on Guild Wars with out seeing any spammers. -shrug-
Believe what you want I guess. I think I've said enough.
So, if WoW is so shitty here and there, why is it they're still on top?
Because of crappy little events nobody gives 2 shits about? =/
Or content?
I agree they're slacking on new and exciting ideas, but then again that's never been a secret.
WoW content, compared to any other game just dwarfs them and it's really not even comparable.
Guild Wars...what was max level when it came out, 20? And how long did it take to reach 20, not very long, not very enjoyable.
Final Fantasy USED to be alright, but the fact that you HAD to group to continue on in story and levels wasn't the road to take and thankfully FF14 will clear that up.
I do play WoW, but I'm not engrossed in it. It's just it's rather hard to deny the facts that it IS the best MMO PC game that has been released to date.
You can say GW2 will blow it away blahblahblah but until it does, it's just speculation.
Just like they thought Aion would blow WoW away, see how that turned out. Then again it was a korean MMO..
./edit
The ONLY thing Guild Wars got right was seperating PvP and PvE.
