The game could've been good if they:

1. Kept the RMAH (at the very least as a gold-only AH).
2. Hired economy/trade specialists to help design the RMAH and Diablo so that the game didn't experience rapid inflation. (They did claim they hired a team to do this very thing, but we all know what happened.)
3. Made the storyline gameplay slightly less linear (more along the lines of Diablo 2). That includes keeping bosses as a potential farming tool, and making bosses less of a cinematic and more of a boss battle.
4. Kept drop rates at the tried and true Diablo 2 level. With the RMAH, and trading forums, that remedies all issues.
5. Support 8 players in a game, creating game names with the ability to search for games, and proper in-game trading windows.
6. Implement abilities with proper collision so that in PvP you can anticipate dodging, being knocked back, or colliding with things. Frozen orb in Diablo 3 is much less natural and harder to follow than Diablo 2's frozen orb, which was implemented very well.
7. Implement proper PvP. Very doable. They did it in Diablo 2, over 16 years ago.
8. Had predictable 3-4 month season rotations with a separate season RMAH during that 3-4 month period.
