lol is not overrated. Big numbers like that just mean that the game is popular and that they are doing something right. D3 number's are higher than I would have guessed. Makes no sense that there are still nubs playing d3 even though the game has been out for 4 years.
The noobs are mostly found in public games. To meet active / skilled players you join a clan and communities.
That being said, I have seen maybe, at the very least, 50 returning players or totally new players this season alone. 50, that I have seen, in the very few channels I am still on, that decided to talk on channels. So that doesn't count the thousand of others that play silently, in one of the other 9999012398513 general chat shitty channels, or the ones that actually realized Communities exist and joined one hoping for help.
Edit: the one big surprise is how dead SWTOR is, and how big World of Tank actually is. WoW/D3 is no surprise. They have never died, they just gathered a ridiculously big player-base, then lost 60% who made noise crying everywhere, but the 40% still playing are still a huge amount, bigger than most other games.
Also, LoL has been known to be the biggest game for a while now.
